Death of a Salesman - Making Connections

In Death of a Salesman, Willy was driving and observing the scenery and he got distracted. It was to the point that he forgot he was driving. Every day people get distracted regardless of what they are doing. Willy had this issue, “I opened the windshield and just let the warm air bathe over me. And then all of a sudden I’m goin’ off the road!” I’m tellin’ ya, I absolutely forgot I was driving” (1100). The scenery prevented Willy from concentrating on the road. Willy could have injured someone. If people could focus on only one thing at a time, it could benefit themselves and others.
At church and school, the topic about what distracts people from God is mentioned quite often. Everyone has things in life that make them not concentrate on God as much as they should. Some of the reasons could be, school, friends, family, relationships, job and entertainment. We should be able to incorporate God into those parts of life. As Christians, we should make God the number one priority in our life. Christians should be able to make time for God every day and not try to make it fast because of other things that may seem more important at the time.
In Death of a Salesman, Linda says, “But you didn’t rest your mind. Your mind is overactive, and the mind is what counts, dear” (1100). Resting is a very important aspect in life. It may cause more people not to get distracted. If many assignments are due, it will stress people out and that may cause them to get more distracted. For Willy, he was preoccupied on something else even though he was driving. The culture now is to multitask even if it is not the best thing to do in order to succeed and accomplish what is best. Not getting off topic is something hard to do especially with our surroundings. Working with family and friends is tough because there are always going to be different topics to talk about other than what the real goal is. Learning to not get distracted as much does take a while, but it can be done.
